Where I’ve Been…and What I’ve Been Reading

Monday, June 9th, 2008

I’ve been traveling. As you might have noticed, I try to post to this blog once a week, usually on Monday or Tuesday. My last post was May 20th. So where have I been?

On Tuesday, May 27th, I was in Southern California, finishing up a trip to celebrate my Mom and Dad’s 50th wedding anniversary. We had a family reunion to go along with it. There were many parties. It was absolutely wonderful, and I miss everyone a great deal.

On Tuesday, June 3rd, I was in Philadelphia speaking at a conference. I also attended daily Mass a couple of times at a Franciscan-run parish called St. John the Evangelist, got my picture taken by a very kind priest who probably just wanted to go home instead of chat with the lady from Seattle, and missed going to the National Shrine of St. John Neumann because I couldn’t get a straight answer on how to get there, other than "take a cab, and probably you don’t want to get out when you get there."

I took the Timothy Radcliffe book with me to California, which I wrote about last time, but in airports I have a bad habit of wandering into bookstores, and in bookstores I have a bad habit of, well, buying books.

At the airport in Seattle I picked up a copy of Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, by Barbara Kingsolver and read it. It’s the story of how she and her family spent a year eating only food that they grew themselves or could obtain from local sources. It’s packed with reasons why eating local is a good idea, and if I’m not exactly a convert yet I’m seriously thinking about how to put some of those principles into practice. It’s worth a look.
